Science Museum of Virginia Renovation & New Dewey Gottwald Center

Overview

The Science Museum of Virginia resides in Richmond’s former Broad Street Rail Station, built in 1919, which is a landmarked structure on the National Register of Historic Places. This project included a 9,300 SF renovation to the Main Concourse Gallery, which houses the “Speed” exhibit, to include space for a Lockheed Blackbird SR-71 supersonic jet airplane. Additional construction of the new 16,000 SF multi-purpose Dewey Gottwald Center provided a separate special event space that required carefully controlled humidity, temperature, and lighting. Five Nines Company served as the Commissioning Agent on the project, which achieved USGBC LEED Gold certification.  The project was also awarded Engineering New Record’s Best Cultural / Worship Project for the Mid-Atlantic region.
